CALCIGOL PLAIN
AND CALCIGOL PLUS
For
the treatment of Milk Fever and Grass Tetany in Cattle and Sheep
Product Benefits:
Milk fever
is one of the most common metabolic diseases of cattle, and is caused
when cows rapidly lose calcium from the blood into colostrum and milk.
The calcium content of milk is up to 10 Ð 12 times that of blood plasma.
Prevalence: It affects mainly high producing dairy cows and occurs most
commonly within 48 hours before or after calving.
Over-fat (condition
score 6+) or older cows have a higher incidence of milk fever due to their
reduced ability to mobilise calcium from their bones. It is most often
seen in cows in their third calving or later, when they are at their peak
production ages.
Symptoms:
Milk fever symptoms include general muscle weakness causing the cow to
go down, rapid weak heartbeat, and contrary to its name, a normal to subnormal
temperature. The rumen contractions cease in milk fever and bloating is
likely to occur, particularly when cows go down. The nose and eye are
dry, and the dung is usually rather dry and firm.
Treatment:
Treatment
should commence as soon as symptoms, such as excitement and muscle tremor
of the head and limbs are noticed. Subcutaneous injection is the safest
and preferred method for dairyfarmers, as there is a risk of heart attack
with intravenous injection, since the solution goes straight into the
circulation. Loose skin on the neck and shoulders provide the best site
for injection. Warming to body temperature prior to injection, and massaging
the area after injection, allows for quicker absorption of the solution.
Disinfect the injection site prior to injection. If a cow is not up within
3 hours of the first treatment give another treatment, or call a vet.
Not all cows that are down after calving are suffering from milk fever.
Other causes include calving paralysis, injury, acute mastitis or infection
of the uterus.
